Glossary of terms for Intaglio Printmaking
Steel-facing - A process whereby an extremely thin coating of iron is deposited by electrolysis on a copper plate, slowing down the wear of the copper plate and extending its printing life. Stop, Stopping, Stopped out - A means of protecting areas of an etching from being bitten or further bitten, while others are bitten to a greater depth for holding more ink and printing darker. Tarlatan - Sheer cotton fabric, heavily sized and used for wiping intaglio plates. Tint Plate - A second plate inked and printed to add color overall.
